Formant un quadrilatère avec tours d'angle, dont un donjon (XIIIe-XIVe s.) qui s'est effondré au début des années 1960, et deux tours encadrant l'entrée, la forteresse fut mise au goût du jour entre 1520 et 1530. Les ailes est et sud, reconstruites dans le style Renaissance, offrent, côté cour, trois étages superposés d'arcades à la romaine séparées par des pilastres ioniques. L'aile sud abrite un escalier en vis couvert d'une remarquable voûte.

En 1622, après l'érection de sa terre en duché-pairie, François V fit réaliser des aménagements intérieurs dont subsiste notamment le cabinet des bains, aux lambris peints de fleurs et de paysages. Au XVIIIe siècle, l'aile occidentale, où François VI, l'auteur des Maximes, avait eu ses appartements, fut reconstruite dans le style classique.
