Claude Gallard probably had an H-plan castle set on a quadrangular platform surrounded by moats, known from engravings of Israël Henriet and Israël Sylvestre (around 1650).
In 1872 the Berlin banker and baron Samuel de Haber bought the castle and started its restoration in the Louis XIII style.
The ceremonial U-shaped internal staircase was demolished and monumental steps inspired by the Château de Fontainebleau one are stuck on each of the façades.
The park, considered as one of the most beautiful in France, was started in the 16th century by the Clausses and finished by the Gallards in the mid-17th century. You will find a driveway of honour between two canals and the big perspective in line with the castle, with its canals and basins among which a long 1,488-foot canal, water expanses and a «water room» and a water mirror.
In 1870, Destailleur turns the park into a landscaped park. The marchioness Jean de Ganay had the U-shaped basin and the Arethusa fountain restored, topped with a marble nymph sculpted in 1711 by Claude Poirier for the Marly park ( the statue was purchased in 2005 by the Louvre museum). In 1930, she creates an «English-Japanese» garden.
